Choreography for Kodachrome Four rolls of Super 8mm Kodachrome, 2006 Kodak stopped making this glorious filmstock and soon it will not be possible to process it. I took my last four rolls and, using my Canon super 8mm camera's auto timer, exposed them to a series of ten-second performative actions. I sent them off for chemical processing, but gave four separate return addresses. The addresses were for Xander Marro in Providence, Shawn Morin in Boston, Chris Lentz in Queens and Golubovich/Zammiello in Burlington, VT. I know that all four recipients have Super 8mm projectors and I take great delight in knowing that the four recipients would be suprised to receive the roll in the mail, having neither shot nor sent anything out for processing recently. In order for them to understand why they've received a roll of film in the mail, they need to project it. Here, the act of projection becomes one of decoding a secret message, an act of translaton that requires three minutes of privacy with a small, flickery, purring machine. The performances are designed to entertain the private moment that my avatar gets to share with my friends. The films are sort of postcards like that. |
