Portrait, 35mm Cinemascope, silent, 7 minutes, 2009 with Hilary Hahn

A violinist practices in the light of Vienna’s dusk. Silent, her gestures echo and resound. The portrait ruptures and she takes our
picture. She draws, we wait, and it turns out that our picture is of her. She offers us a small gesture: that we too are not posing in
this portrait. She takes herself.

A portrait is how others see us showing ourselves, but only as we want others to see us.
There is a second half to every portrait, an audience, predictable in their own poses, “acting naturally”.
